Belilena, Prehistoric cave site near Kitulgala, Sri Lanka
The limestone cave contains multiple chambers and features a lake near its entrance, situated 2000 feet above sea level in dense forest.
Archaeological excavations between 1978 and 1983 revealed human remains and artifacts dating back 32,000 years, including stone tools and animal bones.
The cave holds evidence of early human settlements known as Balangoda Man, with discoveries of trading networks and food preparation techniques.
Visitors need to use ropes or rope ladders to access the cave, and it is recommended to start the journey early morning with proper hiking equipment.
The cave contains the earliest evidence of substantial building structures in South Asia, with rubble foundations dating back 16,000 years.
