Bible Rock, Mountain summit in Aranayake, Sri Lanka.
Bible Rock, also known as Batalegala, is a mountain summit near Aranayake in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It has a broad, flat rocky platform at the top, giving it an unusual profile that can be spotted from a good distance away.
The English name came from British colonists who saw the shape of the rock as an open book resting on a stand. The local population has long known this place by its older Sinhalese name, Batalegala.
A Buddhist temple sits on the summit and opens only on special occasions, such as Sri Lanka's Independence Day. On those days, traditional ceremonies take place there and draw visitors from the surrounding area.
The trail to the top follows stone steps and has safety cables along the steeper sections just before the summit. Starting early in the morning gives cooler conditions and generally clearer views.
On clear days, the summit offers a view of several nearby peaks at once, including Samasara, Urakanda, Ambuluwawa, and Rakshava. This vantage point shows how the ridges of this part of Sri Lanka link up with one another.
