Bible Rock, Mountain summit in Aranayake, Sri Lanka.
Bible Rock is a mountain summit in Aranayake with a distinctive flat top rising about 670 meters above sea level. The broad rocky platform extends across the peak, creating an unusual silhouette visible from surrounding areas.
The name Bible Rock came from British colonists who saw the rock formation's shape resembling an open book on a stand. The local population knows this place by its older name, Batalegala.
A Buddhist temple called Bathalegala Bauddhaloka stands on the mountain, built in 1997 but rarely active. It opens only for special occasions like Independence Day, when visitors can witness traditional ceremonies taking place.
The hike involves a marked trail of about 400 meters with stone steps and safety cables for the steeper sections near the top. It is best to start early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and visibility is at its best.
On clear days, visitors from the summit can spot several neighboring peaks including Samasara, Urakanda, Ambuluwawa, and Rakshava mountains. This panorama of the surrounding ridge line gives a rare chance to see how the mountains of this region connect geographically.
