Horse Museum, Ethnographic museum in Niūronys, Lithuania.
The Horse Museum in Niūronys is an open-air facility spread across eleven buildings housing stables, agricultural equipment, and working tools from the 19th century. The collection includes carts, sledges, and farming implements that farmers once used daily.
The museum was founded in 1978 as a response to preserve rural horse culture at a time when mechanization was transforming agriculture. Local farmers donated their own equipment and animals to build the collection.
The place reflects how horses shaped the everyday work and rhythm of rural life across the region, with objects that tell stories of farming families and their daily routines. Walking through the buildings, you can sense how these animals were woven into the fabric of community life.
The site is best explored on foot, moving naturally from one building to the next at your own pace. You can also take rides along scenic trails through the surrounding parkland if you wish.
The place hosts an annual summer festival called 'Run, Run, Horses' at the local hippodrome featuring horse races and performances. This is one of the few places where you can see live horses working in traditional ways and understand their role beyond just viewing equipment.
