Imbarė hillfort

Imbarė hillfort is an archaeological site featuring earthen ramparts that rise across elevated terrain in Lithuania. The fortification includes defensive structures positioned to take advantage of the natural slope and height of the hilltop.

The site originated as an Iron Age settlement more than two thousand years ago, built by Baltic communities seeking protection. Excavations revealed that the hillfort served as an important defensive position for extended periods in antiquity.

The hillfort reflects how ancient Baltic communities organized their settlements and built defenses to protect themselves from threats. Visitors walking the site can observe how inhabitants once controlled the surrounding landscape from this elevated position.

The site is accessible year-round with marked pathways throughout the grounds and informational panels positioned along the route. Wear appropriate footwear as the terrain can be uneven and muddy, particularly after rain.

Excavations uncovered metal tools and pottery fragments that reveal daily crafts and activities of ancient inhabitants. These artifacts offer rare glimpses into how people worked and created objects in Iron Age Baltic communities.
