Sudargas hillforts, Archaeological hillforts complex near Nemunas River in Šakiai District Municipality, Lithuania.
Sudargas is a complex of five medieval fortifications situated along the left bank of the Nemunas River, forming Lithuania's second largest hillfort ensemble. The site spans across forested terrain with varying elevations and multiple archaeological structures distributed throughout.
The fortifications served as a defense system against the Teutonic Order's attacks during the medieval period, with the main castle falling in 1317. These structures represented military resistance against external threats from northern invaders.
The hillforts serve as a gathering place for local events and sports activities, with the natural terrain creating a natural amphitheater effect. Throughout the year, visitors encounter cultural performances and community celebrations held among the earthworks.
Visitors can follow a developed forest trail of about 190 meters through pine woodlands with a swinging bridge to reach the various fortifications. The path is accessible year-round, but spring through early autumn offers the most comfortable conditions for walking and exploring.
The Vorpilis section preserves visible structural remains from the first millennium, offering a direct connection to ancient settlement patterns. From this vantage point, visitors gain expansive views across the surrounding countryside and river valley.
