Aukstasis Tyras Telmological Reserve, Protected wetland area in western Lithuania.
Aukstasis Tyras Telmological Reserve is a protected wetland area in western Lithuania composed of high peatlands, transitional mires, and shallow oligotrophic lakes. The landscape is shaped by boggy soils, open water surfaces, and scattered alder stands that create different visual impressions depending on the season and water levels.
The reserve was established in 1986 to protect the extensive bog complex and its resident species in the Zemaitija region. It developed into an important conservation area for endangered wetland habitats in Lithuania.
The name reflects the extensive high peatlands that define the landscape and shape how people experience the place. For bird watchers and nature researchers, the reserve serves as a significant location to observe rare species in their natural setting.
Access to the reserve is partially restricted, as many sections remain closed to protect sensitive ecosystems. Visitors should check which routes are open before arriving and bring appropriate footwear for wet, boggy ground.
The reserve contains several thousand natural lakes with nutrient-poor waters that support specialized aquatic plants and fish species. These ecologically valuable lake systems formed during the last Ice Age and testify to the region's geological history.
