SMP-Terminal Būtingė, Oil terminal in Šventoji, Lithuania
The SMP-Terminal Būtingė is an oil facility in Šventoji on Lithuania's coast that receives crude oil from buoys at sea through an underwater pipeline system. The infrastructure includes three floating storage tanks that together hold large quantities of crude oil before it is transported onshore for processing at refineries.
The facility opened in 1999 and was Lithuania's first major energy project following the country's independence. It played a key role in diversifying the nation's energy supply away from Soviet dependencies.
The terminal facility provides educational programs and workshops for students studying maritime logistics and energy supply chain management.
The terminal is accessed from the water through a fixed buoy system connected by pipelines beneath the sea. Visitors can view the facility from a distance along the nearby coastline, as operations take place offshore.
Since 2006, this has been the only way for the local refinery to receive crude oil after previous supply routes were closed. This makes it critical infrastructure for Lithuanian energy independence.
