Buurgplaatz, Mountain summit in Troisvierges, Luxembourg
Buurgplaatz is a mountain summit in northern Luxembourg, close to the town of Troisvierges and near the Belgian border. The peak belongs to the Oesling plateau, a hilly area of forests and open fields that covers the northernmost part of the country.
Buurgplaatz was long considered the highest point in Luxembourg until GPS measurements in the 1990s showed that the nearby Kneiff is slightly higher. This came as a surprise to many, as the summit had been used as a geographic reference for the country for generations.
The name Buurgplaatz comes from Luxembourgish and roughly translates to "castle place", hinting at an old fortified site on the hill. People from the surrounding villages often walk up here on weekends, treating it as a familiar landmark in their local landscape.
The summit is reachable on foot via marked trails starting from Troisvierges, making it a good option for a half-day walk. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as paths can be muddy or slippery depending on the season.
A water tower stands at the top, supplying drinking water to the surrounding communities while also acting as a visible landmark from afar. It is one of the few technical structures built on a hilltop in Luxembourg.
