Berg Castle, Grand Ducal residence in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg
Berg Castle is a royal residence in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg, situated near the confluence of the Alzette and Attert rivers. The structure features fortress-like architecture with gray stone walls and a prominent central tower.
The current building was completed in 1911, replacing a 15th-century castle after Grand Duke William IV ordered its reconstruction in 1906. This rebuild marked a significant turning point in the country's royal architecture.
The castle serves as the primary residence of the Grand Ducal family, with their flag displayed when they are present on the grounds. Visitors can observe this aspect of Luxembourg's royal life from outside the perimeter.
The castle remains closed to public access, but visitors can observe its exterior architecture and grounds from designated viewing areas around the perimeter. The best views are available from public pathways surrounding the estate.
Three Luxembourg monarchs were born within the castle walls: Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde, Grand Duchess Charlotte, and Grand Duke Jean. This connection to three generations of the ruling family makes it a significant place in the country's royal history.
