Marnach transmitter, Radio transmitter facility in Hosingen, Luxembourg
The Marnach transmitter was a broadcasting facility featuring three 105-meter ground-isolated transmission towers and an additional England antenna system for regional signal distribution. The entire installation occupied a 5-hectare site on Schwaarzenhiwwel hill.
The facility was built in 1955 and began broadcasting in December 1956 with 200 kilowatts of power. Capacity later expanded to 1,200 kilowatts before operations ceased on January 1, 2016.
The transmitter broadcast Radio Luxembourg programs in multiple languages, connecting listeners across Europe through medium wave frequencies.
The site is not open to the public today as the buildings were dismantled following the facility's closure. The location is being prepared for new development projects.
At its peak, the transmitter was one of Europe's strongest broadcasting facilities, reaching millions of listeners from Scandinavia to Eastern Europe. This made it a major communication hub for the continent during the second half of the 20th century.
