Schoenfels Castle, Medieval castle in Mersch, Luxembourg.
Schoenfels Castle is a fortified structure in Mersch with a central tower rising above the Mamer Valley, built of stone and characterized by medieval construction. The entrance gate displays the coat of arms of the Schloeder von Lachen family and shows architectural details from different periods of development.
Friedrich of Schonevels built the initial fortified structure in 1292, and it later passed through various noble families. The building then underwent significant changes when outside forces later intervened and altered its purpose.
The castle is part of the Valley of the Seven Castles, a collection of medieval fortifications that shape the Mamer Valley landscape. Visitors see a building that served both as a defensive fortress and a residence, showing the different roles such places played in the region.
The castle is currently not open to visitors due to ongoing restoration work. It is best to check in advance whether the exterior grounds or future openings are possible.
French troops removed the castle's defensive structures in 1683, transforming it from a military stronghold into a purely residential building. This single historical moment completely changed how the place would be used in the centuries to come.
