Selonia, Historical territory in eastern Latvia
Selonia is a historical region in eastern Latvia that stretches across parts of Semigallia and northeastern areas. The territory shows a varied landscape of forests and agricultural land with several major settlements including Jēkabpils, Aizkraukle, Jaunjelgava, Nereta, and Ilūkste.
The region came under control in 1208 when Albert of Buxhoeveden captured the Sēlpils hillfort and incorporated the territory into Christian lands. This conquest marked a turning point in the area's political development.
The Selonians once had their own language, and residents today connect with this heritage through a distinct regional dialect of Latvian that sets them apart from other areas.
The best way to explore this region is to visit the main towns and villages that are connected by good roads throughout the area. Those wanting to experience the landscape should allow time for the forests and agricultural fields that make up much of the territory.
The region is being developed today as a new military training area to strengthen NATO capabilities in the Baltic region. This shift from a traditionally agricultural area to a strategic military complex shows the changing role of eastern Baltic territories.
