Babītes hillfort

Babītes hillfort is an archaeological monument in Jūrmala with raised earthwork defenses and structural remains from the early medieval period. The site occupies elevated terrain and commands views over the surrounding coastal landscape.

The hillfort developed in the early medieval period as a defensive settlement for Baltic tribes on the coast. Excavations have revealed evidence of habitation, trade, and military activity spanning several centuries.

The hillfort demonstrates how early Baltic peoples organized and protected their territories. The remaining structures show a settled community with the means to defend itself.

The site is accessible year-round and has information boards about excavations and structural features. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and weather protection is advisable.

Researchers have used LIDAR technology to create three-dimensional models of the fortification to better understand its construction. These digital records enable research that traditional excavation alone could not accomplish.
