Pope Palace

The Pope Palace is a medieval fortress in Ventspils built along the Venta River, featuring thick stone walls and a solid structure designed for defense. The complex contains several towers and rooms arranged for military and administrative purposes.

The fortress was built in medieval times to protect the region against invasions and served for centuries as a seat of local rulers. It survived multiple sieges and conflicts that shaped its walls and layout.

The palace is best visited during spring through fall when tours are available and weather allows for comfortable exploration. Wearing comfortable shoes is advised since the route involves uneven surfaces and steep stairs.

Beneath the palace runs a network of tunnels and chambers that allowed defenders to move unseen during sieges. These underground passages are partially accessible to visitors and reveal medieval defensive tactics.
