Peitav Synagogue, Art Nouveau synagogue in Old Town, Latvia
Peitav Synagogue is a place of worship in Riga's Old Town designed with Egyptian Revival architectural elements. The interior spans two stories with ornamental details and geometric patterns throughout the space.
The building was constructed in 1905 by architect Wilhelm Neumann as a house of worship for the local community. Its position nestled between other structures in Old Town helped preserve it through difficult periods.
The synagogue served as a gathering place for Riga's Jewish community over many decades. You can see donor names on marble plaques and notice how the Holy Ark is positioned to face Jerusalem.
The synagogue is located in Old Town and welcomes visitors on weekdays and Sunday. Dress respectfully when visiting, as this remains an active place of worship.
During Soviet times this was one of the few Jewish houses of prayer permitted to remain open throughout the entire Soviet Union. This makes it an important testament to the community's resilience under difficult circumstances.
