Pape Nature Reserve, Nature park in Kurzeme region, Latvia
Pape Nature Reserve is a protected natural area in the Kurzeme region along the Baltic Sea coast, encompassing bogs, carr forests, dunes, and a large lake. The landscape supports grazing populations of large herbivores including bison and horses.
The area received protected status in 1977 with the goal of preserving diverse wildlife. Large herbivores including bison, deer, and horses were later introduced to restore natural ecological processes.
The villages of Pape and Koņu maintain traditional fishing homesteads that reflect the maritime history of this region. Visitors can see how life along the water shaped these settlements and continues to influence them today.
Access to the reserve requires arranging a visit three days in advance with park ranger Ints Mednis. Planning ahead ensures you can explore the area when conditions are suitable.
The Natural Process Path is a 9-kilometer trail that passes through five distinctly different habitats in succession: lake, meadow, forest, marsh, and dune. This route reveals the full ecological diversity of the area within a single walk.
