Staburags, Protected geological monument in Sece Parish, Latvia
Staburags is a protected geological site in Sece Parish featuring steep cliff faces composed of layered sandstone and silt deposits. The Gauja River creates a series of small cascades as it flows over these exposed rock formations.
Around 10,000 years ago, following the last ice age, river currents began cutting through these sediment layers and shaping the cliffs. The continuous flow of the Gauja River has been slowly sculpting this landscape ever since.
Latvian folklore includes numerous tales about Staburadze, connecting the geological formation to traditional stories that local communities share.
The site is accessible year-round along marked paths with several viewing points along the cliff edge. Spring through autumn offers the most comfortable conditions for walking the trails.
The cliff face displays distinct color bands that reflect different periods of Earth's history and how ancient seas once covered this region. These visible layers tell a story of how the environment shifted through several geological epochs.
