Višķi St John the Baptist Catholic Church

Višķi St John the Baptist Catholic Church is a stone structure with a single tower and a basilica cruciform layout. The walls are constructed entirely from hewn boulders fitted together to create a solid and durable building.

Construction began in 1908 and finished in 1925, replacing two previous wooden churches on the same site. The earliest recorded church dated back to 1621, showing a long tradition of worship in this location.

The church serves as a gathering place for the Catholic community across the Daugavpils region. Locals still come here to practice their religious traditions and connect with neighbors during regular services.

The church sits on a route between Daugavpils and Aglona in a rural countryside setting near lakes and river landscapes. Visitors should expect rural road conditions and allow time for travel to this remote location.

A lightning strike in 1939 caused significant damage to the roof tiles and interior spaces, requiring extensive reconstruction work. The building recovered from this disaster and its resilience against natural forces became part of its story.
