Zilaiskalns Hill

Zilaiskalns Hill is a hilltop with medieval fortification remains and archaeological layers in Koceni Parish, eastern Latvia. An observation tower sits at the summit, offering views across the surrounding countryside.

The hill was first occupied in ancient times as a strategic location and was later fortified during the medieval period. Excavations have uncovered objects showing continuous use across several centuries.

The Sacrificial Stone at the base of the hill connects visitors to ancient Baltic rituals and beliefs that shaped the region's identity. Local residents maintain stories about this stone that reveal how deeply it is woven into the community's sense of place.

Marked trails guide visitors up the hillside, with the summit being the main destination for views and sightseeing. The site is protected, so staying on designated paths helps preserve the archaeological features.

The site brings together three distinct layers: medieval fortifications, a natural vantage point, and evidence of ancient ritual practices. This combination makes the hilltop a rare place where different periods of occupation overlap visibly.
