Zvārtes iezis

Zvārtes iezis is a large sandstone outcrop rising from the Amata River valley with exposed geological layers visible across its face. The formation features multiple viewing areas and a forested setting typical of the region's natural landscape.

The rock formation takes its name from a former farmstead that stood nearby until its destruction following World War II. The sandstone layers formed through geological processes occurring in earlier periods of Earth's history.

Local folklore includes numerous tales involving witches and supernatural beings gathering at the rock during winter and summer solstices.

The site is accessible through stairways and walking paths that lead to viewing platforms along the rock face. Visit during warmer months when trails are dry and visibility across the river valley is clearest.

The rock naturally divides into two distinct sections, each with its own geological character and visual appearance. The northwestern portion projects outward in an unusual way that creates a striking form against the landscape.
