Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Gothic Catholic church in Central District, Riga, Latvia.
Our Lady of Sorrows Church is a Gothic building at Pils Street 5 featuring pointed arches and stone walls. The structure includes an eight-sided baptistery on its western side, which was later redesigned in the Neo-Renaissance style.
The building was completed in 1785 as the first stone Catholic church constructed in Riga after the Reformation transformed the region. Its creation followed a long period when no new Catholic religious buildings had been established in the area.
The church serves as a spiritual center for Riga's Catholic community, where worshippers gather regularly for services and religious ceremonies. It represents an important part of the city's religious life for those who practice the faith.
The building is located on Pils Street in central Riga and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should check in advance about service times and visiting hours to plan their visit appropriately.
Austrian Emperor Joseph II provided financial support for the construction of this church, highlighting the international significance of the project. The baptistery received its Neo-Renaissance form only in the late 1800s, more than a century after the building itself was completed.
