Vecpiebalga Castle

Vecpiebalga Castle is a medieval fortification of which only stone foundations and partial walls remain standing today. The ruins occupy a raised location that offers views across the surrounding countryside of the Vidzeme region.

The castle was built in the medieval period as a bishop's residence and served as a strategic defensive position in the historical region of Livonia. It controlled this area during the Middle Ages and was subject to the changes that shaped the region's history.

The remaining stones show how medieval builders constructed fortifications using methods common across the Baltic region. Walking around the ruins, you can see the thickness of the walls and how they were fitted together without mortar.

The site is accessible by regional bus with regular service from the nearby city of Cēsis. There are no facilities at the ruins themselves, so wear suitable footwear and bring water for your visit.

The ruins have held national archaeological monument status since 1998, preserving evidence of medieval building methods and local life. Excavations have revealed artifacts that show how people lived within these walls centuries ago.
