Cyrene Museum

The Cyrene Museum holds an extensive collection of marble statues, sculptures, and mosaics from ancient Greek and Roman civilizations discovered in the region.

The museum preserves artifacts from the city of Cyrene, which flourished as a major North African cultural center from 631 BCE through the Roman period.

The collection includes statues of Greek deities, Roman emperors, and local Berber sculptures that demonstrate the intersection of Mediterranean and North African traditions.

Scientific studies have determined that four statues among the museum's collection of 200 pieces contain dolomitic marble from the northern Aegean island of Thasos.

The museum exhibits Libyan sculptures dating from the 5th century BCE, featuring veiled, faceless figures found near tombs related to death goddess Persephone worship.
