Taforalt Cave

Taforalt is an archaeological cave in Berkane Province featuring multiple chambers with layers of human remains and artifacts. The site documents several settlement phases spanning approximately 75,000 years of human occupation.

Excavations beginning in 1908 systematically uncovered human remains and tools from different time periods. These discoveries show how human life in North Africa changed over tens of thousands of years.

The cave holds North Africa's oldest known burial ground, offering insight into how people honored their dead thousands of years ago. The arrangement of graves tells us about the rituals and beliefs that mattered to those ancient communities.

Access to the cave requires a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide to understand the excavation areas and safety measures properly. Visitors should bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, as the interior passages are dark and uneven.

Analysis of plant remains such as acorns and pine nuts reveals that inhabitants gathered food with intention about 23,000 years ago. This evidence shows that people at that time already managed their resources deliberately.
