Aganane Formation, Geological formation in Azilal, Morocco.
The Aganane Formation is a geological sequence in Morocco made of limestone and dolomite deposits interrupted by layers of red marl. These rocks formed in an ancient coastal environment and today can be found at several locations across the Azilal region.
The formation dates back to the early Jurassic period, roughly 190 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the region. Fossil shells from that time show the area was covered by shallow seas where the rock layers accumulated.
The formation holds preserved footprints of dinosaurs that help scientists understand how different species evolved. Visitors can observe tracks left by meat-eating and plant-eating dinosaurs embedded in the rock layers.
The formation spreads across several provinces in central Morocco and can be visited at different locations. Good shoes and some water are helpful since many sites are in hilly or mountainous areas.
The layers show evidence of ancient swamps and lagoons that formed along an old coastline. Visitors can observe how the rocks shift from underwater conditions to drier environments.
