Kasbah Boulaouane, Fortress in Boulaouane, Morocco
The military fortress stands on a rock formation at the curve of Oum Er-Rbia River, providing views across the surrounding agricultural lands.
Sultan Ismail Ibn Sharif commissioned the construction of Kasbah Boulaouane around 1710 as part of a network of administrative fortifications across Morocco.
The architecture incorporates traditional Moroccan elements including mud-brick walls, geometric patterns, and a mosque within its fortified perimeter.
The fortress requires visitors to arrange transportation from El Jadida, as the remote location lacks regular public transport connections.
Sand accumulated over centuries reached the height of the fortress walls until recent restoration efforts uncovered its original structures.
