Kasbah of the Udayas, Fortified citadel in Rabat, Morocco
The Kasbah of the Udayas occupies a strategic position at the mouth of the Bou Regreg River, featuring white and blue painted streets and Andalusian gardens.
Built in the 12th century by the Almohads as a military fortress, the citadel later served as a base for Muslim refugees from Spain in the 17th century.
The architecture combines Moorish elements with traditional Moroccan designs, evident in the monumental gate, ornate windows, and decorative ironwork throughout the complex.
Visitors can explore the museum displaying traditional Moroccan crafts, enjoy mint tea at the Moorish cafe, and photograph the Atlantic Ocean from multiple viewpoints.
Within the fortified walls, 2000 residents maintain their homes in narrow streets, creating an active neighborhood where artists establish studios and galleries.
