Rabbi Shalom Zaoui synagogue

Rabbi Shalom Zaoui synagogue is a place of worship in Rabat's medina that displays Moorish architectural elements. The main prayer room and courtyard feature distinctive trilobal windows and traditional lamp designs, while a red-paved central courtyard connects various functional spaces including prayer areas and modern kitchen facilities.

The building was originally the residence of a revered rabbi who led the community in the 1800s and lived until 1918. This site marks an important chapter in Morocco's Jewish history during a period when diverse religious communities coexisted in the country.

The building is named after a respected rabbi whose teachings shaped the local community. Today the remaining Jewish residents of Rabat gather here for services and celebrations, keeping their religious practices and traditions alive in the medina.

The synagogue is located near Bab Diouana gate and the Andalusian wall, making it easy to find from the main medina streets. Dress modestly and approach respectfully since it remains an active place of worship where religious services take place.

The entrance doors display large Stars of David that make the place stand out on the narrow medina streets. This bright red courtyard creates a striking contrast with the typical earth tones of the surrounding medina buildings and stays with visitors long after they leave.
