Kasbah of Cherarda

Kasbah of Cherarda is a fortification with thick defensive walls and towers located on the northern edge of Fez, displaying traditional North African military architecture. The structure features multiple interconnected sections with various functional areas and elevated positions that overlook the surrounding landscape.

The fortress was built as a strategic military outpost during a period of territorial expansion to protect the northern limits of medieval Fez. It was designed to defend against external threats approaching from beyond the city boundaries.

The fortress displays traditional Moroccan building methods using mud brick and geometric designs characteristic of North African fortifications. Walking through the structure, you notice how local builders shaped the walls and openings to create spaces that served both defense and daily functions.

The best access is along the northern circuit of the old city walls, where local guides are available at the main entrance. The structure is walkable, though some areas involve climbing steep sections, so comfortable shoes and steady footing are important for exploring elevated parts.

The structure maintains its original defensive layout with multiple gates and watchtowers offering views across the entire Fez valley. These elevated positions reveal how carefully the site was chosen to spot approaching visitors or threats from great distances.
