Sqala of Kasbah, Artillery platform in Essaouira, Morocco.

The Sqala of Kasbah extends along the Atlantic Ocean with two levels of stone fortification walls containing Spanish bronze cannons.

Built in 1765 under Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah, this military structure defended the city during the French bombardment of Mogador.

The fortification represents a combination of French military architecture and Moroccan construction techniques, now part of UNESCO World Heritage.

The ground floor contains storage rooms turned into artisanal shops, while the upper level provides ocean views and access to ancient cannons.

The cannons, manufactured in Seville and Barcelona between 1743 and 1782, measure 3.25 meters and could fire 10-pound projectiles at 1,500 meters.

Location: Essaouira

Part of: Essaouira Ramparts
