Tour de L`Horloge, Clock tower in Essaouira, Morocco

The Clock Tower is a white stone structure in the Medina with four clock faces pointing outward from each side. It stands about 15 meters tall and rises visibly above the surrounding houses, making it easy to spot from different streets.

The tower was built in 1764 when the city was thriving as a major trading hub. Its clock mechanism came later, becoming a fixture of daily life in the Medina.

The tower mixes Moroccan and European building styles, showing the port's past as a meeting place for traders from different lands. You can see this blend in the carved stone details and the way it stands among the surrounding old buildings.

The tower sits right in the center of the Medina and is easy to reach from any direction, even though the streets wind around. It works well as a meeting spot and helps you get your bearings among the narrow lanes.

The clock mechanism stopped working and sat silent for a full decade until local craftspeople fixed it in 2012 using old-fashioned repair methods. This restoration brought back a sound that had been missing from the Medina for years.

Historical monuments and cultural heritage of Essaouira

The UNESCO-protected Medina of Essaouira displays 18th-century Moroccan architecture. The fortification walls with Portuguese cannons enclose traditional souks, synagogues, and mosques. The fishing port with blue and white boats and the 3-kilometer beach define the maritime cityscape. The palaces, religious sites, and museum preserve the region's cultural heritage.
