Bab El Mechouar, Ancient fortified gate in Essaouira, Morocco.

Bab El Mechouar is a fortified gate in Essaouira featuring three arched passages of varying widths that formed part of the original palace complex structure. The central opening and side entrances display symmetrical design typical of military buildings from that period.

The gate was built in 1764 under sultanic orders and was part of a larger administrative facility that strengthened control over the city. Its construction marked a period of urban beautification and military organization under central authority.

The gate takes its name from a historical palace residence and displays features of Moroccan architecture with arched structures and green tilework. Visitors can observe these details and understand how they reflected the military presence of the city during that era.

The gate is accessible throughout the year and sits near artisan workshops and traditional markets worth exploring. Visiting in the morning works best, as it tends to be less crowded and details are easier to observe.

The gate is one of the few surviving remains of the original palace complex and still displays colored ceramics in various states today. These remnants offer visitors a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship techniques of the region from that era.
