St. George church in Chișinău, Orthodox church in central Chișinău, Moldova.
St. George Church is a temple in central Chișinău featuring a rectangular floor plan without apses. A 15-meter-high brick tower stands at its entrance and shapes its outer appearance.
Construction started in 1814 under Metropolitan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni and was completed in 1819 when the iconostasis was installed. The building suffered heavy damage during World War I that was repaired later.
The church served as a gathering place for the diverse community of the city and mirrors the religious variety that has shaped Chișinău. People of different backgrounds came together here for services and shared celebrations of faith.
The church functions today as an active Orthodox place of worship and is open for visitors to view its interior and architectural features. Allow time to explore the spaces at a leisurely pace and observe religious practices when they occur.
During World War I, German troops repurposed the building as a prison and stable, causing substantial destruction. The subsequent restoration work between 1919 and 1922 brought it back to life and made it an example of recovery after conflict.
