National Museum of Fine Arts, National art museum in Chișinău, Moldova
The National Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in Chișinău housed in two historical buildings along 31 August 1989 Street, including Vladimir Hertza's villa and a former girls gymnasium. The spaces contain collections of European and Moldovan artworks across various mediums.
The museum was founded in 1939 and began with over 100 artworks from Bessarabian and Romanian artists in its original collection. In the early years of World War II, significant portions of the collection were transported elsewhere.
The museum displays European prints including works by Albrecht Dürer alongside Moldovan paintings and sculptures spanning different periods. The collection reflects artistic connections between Western Europe and the region.
The museum is located in central Chișinău and is open to visitors from Tuesday through Sunday. It helps to plan enough time to explore the different galleries and their collections at a comfortable pace.
A significant portion of the original collection was transported to Kharkiv during World War II and its whereabouts remain unknown to this day. This history continues to raise questions about lost artworks from the region.
