National Theatre "Mihai Eminescu", Historic theatre in Central Chișinău, Moldova.
The National Theatre Mihai Eminescu is a neoclassical building with three levels, Corinthian columns, and marble-lined foyers located in central Chișinău. Cylindrical architectural elements define its facade and give the structure its distinctive appearance.
Construction began in 1931 but was interrupted by the Great Depression and resumed in 1940 under Soviet administration. The building was completed and converted into a theatre in the 1950s after surviving World War II intact.
The theatre functions as a stage for both classical dramas and contemporary productions, bringing together local and guest performers to showcase a wide range of artistic interpretations. It serves as a gathering place where Moldova's performing arts traditions continue to evolve and reach audiences across generations.
The building sits on Stefan cel Mare Boulevard 79 in the city center and is easily reached by buses and trolleybuses that run along the main avenue. It is advisable to arrive early to appreciate the exterior architecture before entering for a performance.
The building remained unharmed during World War II because it was still under construction and therefore overlooked as a potential target. This fortunate circumstance allowed it to be completed and transformed into a cultural venue in the postwar era.
