Saharna landscape reserve

Saharna landscape reserve is a protected natural area in central Moldova featuring river valleys, limestone formations, and dense forest cover. The terrain includes steep rocky slopes, open meadows, and the Saharna River running through the heart of the reserve.

The area gained protected status in the late 20th century to preserve its natural landscape and the monastic communities within it. This formal protection followed Moldova's shift toward modern conservation practices.

Several monasteries stand within the reserve, where monks follow daily spiritual practices that have continued for centuries. These religious communities live in harmony with the surrounding landscape, shaping the rhythm of life in this area.

The reserve is best explored on foot using marked trails that pass through different landscape zones. Spring and autumn are ideal times to visit, when temperatures are comfortable and paths are in their best condition.

Multiple waterfalls cascade down the limestone cliffs along the Saharna River, forming small natural pools beneath them. These water features result from millennia of rock erosion and are often overlooked by visitors focused on the forest and meadows.
