Țipova Monastery, Orthodox cave monastery near Țipova village, Moldova
Țipova Monastery is a cave monastery carved into limestone cliffs along the Nistru River, with three sections containing approximately 18 interconnected chambers and multiple churches. The complex uses the natural rock face to create its religious spaces, integrated directly into the steep hillside above the water.
Monks established this religious site before the Moldovan feudal state formed, with the earliest rock-carved cells dating to the 10th century. This early foundation makes it one of the oldest monastic communities in the region.
The monastery has served as an active Orthodox worship center since 1994, drawing pilgrims who visit to pray and observe religious celebrations. Monks use the cave spaces for services, maintaining a living Christian tradition within these ancient chambers.
The complex is located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Chișinău and welcomes visitors during daylight hours to explore the cave churches and ancient living spaces. The surrounding area includes a nature reserve, giving visitors opportunities to walk and experience the landscape along the river valley.
Archaeological excavations in the 1990s revealed human remains from the late 15th century within the rock chambers. This discovery suggests the site saw continuous use across centuries and carries layers of historical continuity that span centuries.
