Majuro, Capital atoll in Marshall Islands
Majuro is an atoll in the Pacific Ocean that serves as the capital of the Marshall Islands, consisting of a ring of islands enclosing a large lagoon. The islands form a narrow chain connecting several inhabited settlement areas along its length.
German colonial administration established itself here from 1885 onward, bringing early Western governance structures to the region. After Japanese control during the early 20th century, United States administration took over following 1945.
The population centers of Dalap, Uliga, and Darrit form the main settlement areas where Marshallese traditions remain central to community life.
Most facilities and services concentrate along the eastern islands where the main settlement areas are located. Movement between islands follows a single road that runs for considerable distances along the narrow landmass.
The harbor serves as a major transshipment point for regional fisheries, connecting the islands to international shipping routes across the Pacific. The lagoon provides anchorage for vessels coming from different parts of the Micronesian region.
