Luboten, Mountain summit in Jegunovce Municipality, North Macedonia.
Luboten is a mountain summit in the Sharr range, located in Jegunovce Municipality in North Macedonia, rising to around 2,500 meters on the border with Kosovo. The peak is reached by several trails, with the Mountain Hut Ljuboten serving as one of the main starting points for the ascent.
The Sharr range, where Luboten stands, was crossed for centuries by different groups moving through the Balkans, and the high passes were used as natural routes between settlements. The peak became a more established hiking destination in the 20th century as mountain tourism grew in the region.
The peak sits on the border between North Macedonia and Kosovo, which gives it a special place in the daily life of people on both sides. Hikers from both countries share the same trails, and this cross-border meeting point gives the mountain a role that goes beyond a simple outdoor destination.
The Mountain Hut Ljuboten is a good base for starting the ascent and offers a place to stay for those who want an early start. The higher sections of the route can be exposed and rocky, so proper footwear and layered clothing are worth bringing regardless of the season.
Near the top, three rock formations named Shija Ljubotenska, Kozja Karpa, and Shiljast Kamen give the ridge a very recognizable outline when seen from below. On a clear day these shapes can be spotted from far down the trail, acting as natural markers for hikers on their way up.
