Sharr Mountains National Park

Sharr Mountains National Park is a protected area covering a vast landscape in the northern section of a mountain range that extends into Albania and North Macedonia. The terrain is steep and varied, with numerous peaks, valleys, and forests running through it.

The park was established in 1986 and revised in 2012 to improve its management. The mountains themselves have been known since ancient times, when they were called Scardus.

Communities near Prizren and Dragash keep traditions tied to mountain life, especially in making dairy products and raising livestock. You can still see these skills practiced in daily routines when walking through the villages.

The park is accessible by car from Pristina in just over an hour, and hiking is best from spring through fall. The warmer months make the trails easier to walk and more enjoyable to explore.

The park has more than 30 peaks rising above 2,500 meters, making it a draw for mountaineers seeking high altitude adventures. The rich variety of plants and bird life shows how alive and ecologically important these alpine spaces truly are.
