Big Rudoka, Mountain summit in Šar Mountains, North Macedonia and Kosovo.
Big Rudoka is a mountain summit in the Sar range straddling the border between North Macedonia and Kosovo, reaching 2,658 meters in elevation. Its eastern face drops sharply while the western slopes descend gradually, creating a landscape with alpine meadows, water sources, and several small lakes.
This peak sat on disputed territory for decades until 2001, when North Macedonia and Serbia signed an agreement that formally settled the border location. The treaty clarified the exact territorial boundaries in this mountainous region and ended long-standing uncertainty.
Shepherds have used the pastures around this peak for generations, moving their flocks seasonally between lower valleys and high grasslands. You can still see traditional stone huts scattered across the slopes, evidence of this long-standing way of life.
Most hikers begin their route at Hotel Arxhena, which offers parking and dining to prepare for the climb. The marked trail follows a river valley, giving you access to water and making it easy to stay on the correct path.
Two alpine lakes, Crno Jezero and Belo Jezero, lie on the slopes near the summit and offer striking contrast between dark and light waters. The Mazdrača stream begins at the darker lake and flows toward the Vardar River, creating an important water source for the region below.
