Karanikola Lake, Glacial lake in Šar Mountains, North Macedonia
Karanikola Lake is a glacial lake situated in the Šar Mountains at high elevation on a mountain plateau. The water displays a striking dark blue color and is framed by rocky cliffs that surround it like a natural basin.
The lake formed thousands of years ago through glacial action that carved deep basins into the mountainside. This process also shaped the steep rocky walls that now surround and define its appearance today.
Local shepherds from surrounding villages maintain traditional practices near the lake, influencing the water clarity through their livestock activities.
Access to the lake comes via several hiking paths starting from the nearby village of Veshala and gradually climbing higher. Visitors should expect variable weather and harsh conditions at this elevation and come prepared accordingly.
The water is fed mainly by underground springs that cluster together at the lake bottom and give it an exceptional dark blue color. This hidden water source makes it a geologically distinctive system within the mountain region.
