Šarena Mosque

Šarena Mosque is a mosque with a square stone structure in Tetovo covered in intricate geometric patterns and floral ornaments painted in multiple colors. Its exterior walls display detailed craftsmanship with designs spread across the entire facade.

This mosque was built in 1438 during the Ottoman period and stands as one of the earliest religious structures in the Polog region of North Macedonia. Its construction took place as the Ottomans consolidated their rule and built monuments of faith across the territory.

This mosque reflects how Islamic and local Balkan artistic traditions came together, visible in the painted decorations covering its walls. The colorful patterns show how craftspeople combined different influences to create something that belonged to this region.

You can enter through the main entrance on Miladinovi Street and should wear respectful clothing while being mindful of prayer times. Guided tours are available outside prayer times and help explain the details of the decoration and architecture.

What makes this mosque special is the lasting durability of its painted exterior walls, achieved through traditional craftsmanship techniques. The carefully prepared paint mixture has proven resistant to weather and time.
