National park Šar Planina

National park Šar Planina stretches across mountain ridges, dense forests, and river valleys in western North Macedonia. The landscape contains different elevation zones with varying plant communities and water features.

The park was established in 2021 to protect the region's natural resources and water systems. This formal recognition marked an important step in safeguarding the mountain's ecological importance.

Multiple hiking trails provide access to the park, with main entrance points near Tetovo and Gostivar. It is wise to prepare for changing weather conditions, as conditions shift rapidly at higher elevations.

The region serves as a major water storage area for the central Balkans, with numerous springs feeding rivers. This role as a water divide gives the mountain special importance for surrounding regions.
