Golem Grad, Lake island in Resen Municipality, North Macedonia.
Golem Grad is a lake island in Lake Prespa within Resen Municipality. The island covers approximately 20 hectares and reaches maximum dimensions of 600 meters long and 350 meters wide.
Early Christian communities built two churches on the island during the fourth and fifth centuries. These remains near the summit reveal that the site served as an important religious center during that period.
Seven churches once stood on the island, dedicated to Saints Peter, Dimitrija, Atanas, George, and Ilya. These religious structures shaped the island's character and reflect its long spiritual importance to local communities.
Access to the island is possible only by boat from the village of Konjsko, situated approximately two kilometers across the lake. Visitors should prepare for a boat journey and monitor weather conditions during their visit.
The island is home to several snake species, including the nose-horned viper, earning it the alternate name Snake Island. These reptiles have made their home in this isolated setting over time.
