Cocev Kamen, Cave with prehistoric art near Kratovo, North Macedonia.

Cocev Kamen is an archaeological site comprising natural caves on a hilltop adorned with red geometric rock art. The complex features two main caves with carved stairs, water basins, and shaped stone seating areas throughout.

The site shows human occupation from the Paleolithic period through the Middle Ages, evidenced by bone remains and stone tools discovered there. This long span of use indicates the location held importance for successive cultures across thousands of years.

The Lower Cave contains two rows of rock seats arranged as a gathering place for the community. The Upper Cave shows signs of ritual use, with altar stones suggesting ceremonies took place within its walls.

Access starts at the junction where the asphalt road meets the dirt track, with the path leading uphill to the complex. Plan for a 30-minute walk and wear sturdy footwear, as the route is steep and uneven in places.

Researchers found deliberate modifications on stone surfaces showing systematic design patterns not typical of everyday shelter. These markings may relate to tracking celestial movements, suggesting the caves served an observational purpose.
