Church of St. George, Staro Nagoričane

The Church of St. George in Staro Nagoričane is a Byzantine structure featuring a cross-in-square design crowned by five domes. The construction displays stone blocks at the lower section and a combination of brick and stone in the upper portions.

The original church was built in 1071 during the reign of Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes. Under the patronage of Serbian King Stefan Milutin, a major reconstruction took place between 1313 and 1318 that shaped its current appearance.

The interior walls display religious scenes created by Michael Astrapas and Eutychios that feature both Greek and Slavonic inscriptions. These paintings tell stories of faith in a way that people from different cultures could understand.

The site is typically accessible during daylight hours and allows visitors to explore the architectural details and wall paintings closely. The surroundings are relatively quiet, and visitors should consider appropriate clothing as this is a religious space.

The building unites two distinct construction phases visible in its hybrid design that combines original stone columns with later additions. This blending of older and newer components creates an unusual architectural layering.
