Samuil's Fortress, Medieval fortress in Ohrid, North Macedonia
The stone fortification extends across the hilltop with walls reaching heights of 16 meters and stretching 3 kilometers around the ancient city.
King Philip II of Macedon initiated the construction of the first fortification on this strategic location, which later became the capital of Tsar Samuel's empire.
The fortress holds military architecture from multiple periods, including Roman, Byzantine, Slavic, and Ottoman influences, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of Macedonia.
Visitors can access the fortress through preserved gates and walkways, with the Upper Gate serving as the main entrance point to explore the grounds.
Archaeological excavations within the fortress walls revealed ancient artifacts, including a golden mask and glove dating back to the 5th century BCE.
