Pelister, Mountain summit in Baba massif, North Macedonia
Pelister is a mountain summit in the Baba massif that rises to 2601 meters in elevation. The northern slopes are covered in dense Molika pine forests, while the eastern face features dramatic cliff formations.
The mountain territory became a National Park in 1948, protecting natural formations shaped by glacial activity during ice ages. This designation safeguarded the geological features and the landscape's remarkable geological history.
A memorial plate at the summit honors Dimitar Ilievski-Murato, the first Macedonian mountaineer who reached the top of Mount Everest.
Three main hiking routes reach the summit: from Trnovo village via Kopanki hut, from Nizepole to Golemo Ezero, and from Arvati near Prespa Lake. Access is easiest from the western side, though all routes demand solid hiking experience and appropriate gear.
Stone rivers flow down the mountainside, created by ancient glacial movements that arranged massive granite blocks across the slopes. These formations reveal how ice-age forces continued to shape the landscape long after the glaciers melted.
