Astibo is an ancient settlement with remains of fortification walls and various buildings near Štip in eastern North Macedonia. The ruins spread across hilly terrain and show different construction phases from various periods.
The site was first settled during the Hellenistic period and later served as a Roman settlement within the Balkan region. These successive phases make it an important location for understanding regional development.
The site reveals layers of settlement from different periods, showing how various peoples lived here one after another. Pottery and coins found during excavations show what daily life was like and which places people traded with.
The site is reachable on foot from nearby Štip, and paths to it are generally accessible. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended, and bringing sun protection is wise since the ruins offer little shade.
Ancient sources mention ritual bathing by Paeonian kings in the nearby river as part of their coronation ceremonies. This connection between the site and royal rituals suggests Astibo held special importance for the local ruling class.
